Just the other day, I was having a great conversation with one of my first time pregnant friends. She was telling me she gets unsolicited advice all the time and posted a really funny article about it. It really got me thinking and she asked me how I handle it. Well, how I would handle it is probably not how every mom or mom to be would handle it so lets go over some options:

 

  1. Respectfully decline. This can by simply telling the person thanks, but no thanks. You have made up your mind and appreciate their input, but you do not need it.
  2. Be confident in your choices. Having confidence in your parenting choices is very important. This will prevent you from feeling #momguilt. I discussed mom guilt in one of my previous posts “To all Moms”: Mom Guilt!
  3. Defend yourself. This one may not be for everyone, but if you feel like you are being judged or questioned, you have every right to take a stand!
  4. Go with your gut. Something I learned is that just because something worked for one kid it does not work for the second. To be honest, my two kids are night and day. Nothing about them is the same except their looks! The same applies when another mom is pressuring you do something because it worked for them. There are no guarantees!
  5. Let yourself off the hook. Being a new mom, or a parent of multiple kids is hard enough. You are doing the best you can and that is all that matters. At the end of the day, you can sleep (if your kids sleep J ) knowing you did what you could and you did what was best for your kids.

 

These are just a few ways to on how to handle pressure. It really depends on your personality, comfort level, and situation. Unfortunately, pressure from other moms does not go away after you have kids. For example, I have two and people still try to tell me how to be a better parent. Until we reach a point where moms stop judging other moms there will always be someone out there who feels they are a better parent than you. Do not worry about what other people think and remember you are an amazing mom doing what is best for you and your family.

  1. I can’t tell you how long it took me to be okay with verbally declining others opinions on my parenting style and choices. But after a while, I just didn’t have time to act like I needed it and I became this blunt, honest woman I am today lol!
